Recorded in 1965 but not released until 1980, Etcetera captures Wayne Shorter at the peak of his creative powers during his tenure with Blue Note. The quartet—featuring Herbie Hancock on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums—delivers a set of thoughtful, meditative, and harmonically rich compositions. Unlike some of his more explosive work with Miles Davis or the Jazz Messengers, this session leans into space and subtlety, revealing Shorter’s introspective side.
The title track and “Barracudas (General Assembly)” highlight Shorter’s ability to stretch post-bop boundaries, while “Penelope” is a masterclass in lyrical minimalism. Herbie Hancock’s piano work is fluid and responsive, and McBee’s bass provides an elastic foundation that encourages exploration. Though it remained in the vaults for 15 years, Etcetera is now widely regarded as a hidden gem in Shorter’s catalog.
